In the next 25 years, the Metro Vancouver population is projected to increase to 3.8 million people—more than one million more than today. This growth comes with transportation-specific challenges, including traffic congestion and long commutes. And it can be difficult for business, government, and municipalities to keep pace with the physical and digital infrastructure needed to keep goods and people moving. There’s also the pressing need to shift away from fossil fuels toward cleaner, greener, and more sustainable energy.
These issues can and must be solved. Finding solutions can help us to build a more sustainable, productive, and prosperous region, to become a leader in the new economy and show other regions how they can grow and prosper as well. And growth also brings opportunities to power British Columbia’s economy with new skills, a diversity of perspectives, and bigger aspirations.
To develop this future, every player in the transportation ecosystem must work together: business, academia, and every level of government need to reach outside their silos to transform the way the people and goods move.
